Casual Friday: Just For You

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)

TGIF all!

A few days ago at work a woman stopped me and said “I love how you dress. I like that you’re not afraid of color”.  I was pleasantly surprised by her comment. I often go through my day oblivious to whether people take notice of me or not. The level of freedom I feel when I dress for myself is so gratifying.  I wear things only I like and that  make me feel good.  So, when people ask me if I’m dressed for a special reason or occasion, I say “Nope, I like to dress for myself!”

Have a wonderful weekend!

From the Daughter of a Single Mother

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)

My Mother's Letter- From the Daughter of a single mom You know, as I think about Mother’s Day, my mother and my childhood, I have so much to be thankful for. I sat here and thought about the woman I am and how I have gotten this far and through it all, I was a handful for my mom… a divorced single mother of two daughters, working for the Navy, making it look effortless.

Growing up, she was superwoman to me.

And there I was trying her.

I grew up constantly being reminded by family and family friends, of the statistic that affects daughters of single mothers.  Reminded of how my mother was a single parent and the expectation of “failing” or “being a statistic.” By the time I was 18, I was already told that “we thought you would be the first one!” said with such amazement of me being 18, in college, working full time, and part of my college’s competitive cheer leading team… *inserts side eye* Gee, thanks close family and friends.

My Mother's Letter- From the Daughter of a single momSo I used that as fuel to do my best, to show them, to one up them, to prove to myself that I am not a statistic. But most of all, I did it to make my mother proud of me. Being a young mother, she did not want that for me. She wanted us to have and experience more out of life before settling down and having a family. No lie, she had me repeating the phrase to in response to her question, “Marie, how are you going to be when you get married?” To her friends amazement and entertainment, “THIRTYYYY-ONE!” I would happily exclaim!

Little did I realize how (somewhat) true this would be.

“I wanted more for you than this little girl from Compton. I wanted to see the world and I wanted you to have a different outlook on life and not feel like you had to marry right out of high school” my mother would remind me. “I want you to be able to eat at a $5 table or a $500 table” my mother would tell me as she enrolled my sister and I into etiquette classes while we lived in Hawai’i, learning how to be a “lady.”

As many times as she said she hadn’t the clue what she was doing, it was all part of God’s plan for me, one that I finally see, in retrospect. One that is the reason I write this today.

My Mother's Letter- From the Daughter of a single momI sooo am my mother’s daughter.

One that challenges the norm. One that you can never tell no too. One that always and constantly pushes herself to do and be more and one who “Never lets them see you sweat.” I mean, I could never really go to my mom when I was sad about whatever situation… she would always challenge me to hold my head high and push through.

Maybe this is why my uncle still jokes with me about the “no” thing. He would always remind me of how growing up, if you told me no, I would always find a way around it to get what I wanted. Maybe being the eldest grandchild helped me here, but I always would answer “why not?” to any challenge and I KNOW, I got this from my mother.

So with her influence and drive, career became my focus and goal, until it didn’t. Then my blog and its evolution into a business became everything for me until about last year January! A time where I finally realized that I am ready. Or that I thought I was for that next chapter in my life- marriage, family, and all of that jazz. I mean, do not get me wrong, I have had my fun with dating and relationships with the many lessons learned and all, but now, I wanted something more.

My Mother's Letter- From the Daughter of a single momBut this Mother’s Day, means a bit more to me… now that I am in this chapter of my life, across the country from my mom. One that, as I clean, wash, and do my own thing out here in Atlanta, I see MORE of what my mother said, taught, and did for my sister and I.

My mother, the single mother, was indeed superwoman, raising two little girls who never knew of a glass ceiling, who always challenged their own limits and who despite all odds, turned out okay.

My mother, who served 23 years in the navy and then rocked a part time bartending job to ensure my sister and I had a few nice things, never let my sister and I see her sweat.

My mother, who made PB&J sandwiches sound and feel like a feast, who swore we were barely making ends meet, filled our childhood with her love and hilarious memories, who strived to give us more than what she had, she did that.

My mother, who I now see as an adult, whose pain, scars, and weariness she attempted to hide, now revealing itself unabashedly, as a strong, flawed, and interestingly layered woman- I am humbled and blessed to call you mom.

This Mother’s Day, as I cannot be with you in person, given the 2500+ miles, I write this note to you to say thank you. Thank you for you sacrifices, the kick in the ass, the discipline, the advice, the recipes on how to make a kick ass steak on the grill, the obsession with board games! Thank you for the never-give-up spirit you’ve instilled in my sister and I. Thank you for never allowing me to wallow or self-sabotage my dreams and for always reminding me to live life fully.

I am all of who I am because of you and as the daughter of a single mom, I salute you and I can never say thank you enough.

My Mother's Letter- From the Daughter of a single momI LOVE YOU MOM!

Fashion Blogger Spotlight: Isabell of Dressing Outside The Box

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)

Hope you enjoyed meeting UK blogger Stephanie of Nerd About Town last week.  This week, we are moving across the English Channel to meet up with German blogger Isabell of Dressing Outside the Box.  Isabell is a fashion designer, so you know she knows great style, and her goal of inspiring body confidence in others is just so inspiring.  Her style is minimalist, chic, and a bit androgynous, but Isabell is really just all about abandoning fashion rules and dressing for herself, without labels.  She is a plus size blogger YOU NEED TO KNOW!!

Meet Isabell of Dressing Outside the Box!

Blog:  www.dressingoutsidethebox.com
Height: 5″4
Age: 28
Location: Stuttgart, Germany

DSC_0459new670What made you want to become a fashion blogger?
I have always been into fashion so it has been only consequential to me becoming a fashion designer. Never really feeling comfortable in my own skin, it just didn’t occurred to me that I could convey my love of fashion through my own body. I have designed beautiful clothes for others but didn’t dare to use fashion for myself. Then I came across plus-size blogs that changed my perspective and, with it, my whole life. It has been a journey of almost 2 years from rejecting my body to completely falling in love with it. Once I became the confident woman I am today, I developed the wish of sharing my experience, hoping it will help others to experience the same.

What are the challenges, if any, you face in being plus-size?
The biggest challenge for me is finding clothes which are really fashion forward. At my job I am constantly learning about new trends and I am seeing fast fashion retailers such as Zara putting these in action so quickly while us plus-size girls have to wait often a half year or longer until plus-size brands dare to offer them in their collection. Of course, I also see that the plus industry is improving a lot now, but for me as a fashion designer only wanting to be able to wear the newest trends, it is not yet satisfying.

What’s your favorite thing about being plus size?
Now that I have learned to love my body, I really like the idea of not fitting in. After years and years of only longing to be so-called “normal”, I could finally break free from it. It feels so liberating. For the first time, I feel that I can finally be myself.Plus Size Blogger Spotlight on Isabel from Dressing Outside the BoxWhat’s your favorite thing about being a blogger? A plus size fashion blogger?
One thing is definitely being able to put yourself out there and stepping out of your comfort zone. I would have never believed how affirming this could be if I hadn’t experienced it myself. My most favorite part about being a blogger is belonging to a wonderful network of lovely and inspiring people. Just being a part of it and being able to reach others and maybe being able to make a change is making me proud.

Who/what are your favorite designers/brands?
I love labels such as Isabel Marant, Céline and Jil Sander. But when it comes to plus-size fashion, my favorites are definitely ASOS, Eloquii, Junarose, Zizzi and Carmakoma. And I really like the wide fit shoe range from New Look.

Describe your personal style.
This is a really tough one because I believe that I can’t be put in a box. But besides that I consider my style to be clean, minimalistic, up to date and effortless.

Any bloggers currently on your radar?
I am totally in love with Anissa from Anisacrament, Miss Lion Hunter and Tinu from Tinuology. These three are raising fashion to a whole new level.Plus size Blogger Spotlight- Isabell from Dressing Outside the BoxAnything else you want The Curvy Fashionista’s readers to know?
Be unapologetically yourself. Don’t ever let anyone else make you feel less worth than you are. You are perfect just the way you are, and you are worth all the love and happiness!

Maxi-mum

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)

Some days you just throw on a maxi dress, relax and live your life.  That's what I did today.  My dress was catching wind and giving me a nice little breeze.  This dress hit me right at the ankles, even though the wind blowing makes it look shorter.  I am 5'9 and got a size 20. You can find it here. I keep this look very clean, natural, and simple.  Comfort at it's best.

The Art of Dressing Well: Looking Past Models & Styling

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)

I've been blessed with the ability to look past models that who don't resemble my size or body type and bland styling, which has allowed to find fabulous items and pick out some of the best items that plus fashion has to offer.  Through countless comments, I have seen people totally discount whole clothing lines just because the presentation of the pieces weren't to their liking and in the same breath say they can't find plus size clothing.  Person ally spe aking, the days of not having ample plus size fashion options are fleeting fast.   I have been able to dictate exactly how I want to look through plus size fashion, and I have a whole blog to prove it.  So the question remains, why can't you find the items you want and what can you do to change that?

How to look past bland styling?

  • A classic piece is a classic piece - Meaning that no matter how terrible the styling is, the piece is still is a closet staple that can be used to make great looks.  For instanc e, take a black skirt, I have seen black skirts ruined online by lackluster styling and a bad fit, BUT at the end of the day, it's a black skirt. Looking past the model, and onto the skirt you would just need to gage length (the description usually gives you that) and fit.
  • Don't judge every piece by the majority of the pieces you don't like - I can dislike 49 pieces in a line, but like the 50th piece.  I will purchase the 50th piece because I'm not going to hold the one piece accountable for the 49 pieces I don't like.  If I can shop and like 1 - 3 pieces, then it's a successful, in my eyes.  I don't want all of my wardrobe to come from one place AND because I only like to buy things that I love, I usually don't like to buy more than 2 pieces from one spot at one particular time. For me, putting together great plus size lo oks is a bout taking a piece from various places and putting a look together.  I'm not expecting to shop for everything all in one place.
  • Plus size clothing doesn't have hanger appeal.  I have seen some of the most beautiful plus size clothing on a hanger and it looks just awful, but then you try it on and it comes to life.  When shopping online or in-store give things a chance to be tried on.  (FYI, DIA & Co is a service that will allow you to try before you buy).
  • Classic prints make for a great item.  A great classic print is an excellent starting point to finding an item you love.  Seek out stripes, tartan, plaid, houndstooth, and polka dots.
How to look past models?

(This is not a dig at the models, but as many of you have said, it can be hard to look at a model who is on the small end of plus and dictate what the garment will look like you).

  • Know what type of silhouettes look good on you already. I know fit/flare & pencil skirts at a midi length look great on me. I automatically know when I see those that will be something that I will gravitate to.  Because I know this is a great item for me, I'm not looking at the mannequin, model, air mannequin, or bad styling.  I just need it to be a print or color that I like.
  • Seek out a blogger with a similar body type. I appreciate all the support you guys give me, but I want you to check out other bloggers if they are going to help you with your dressing needs (but make sure you still come back over here LOL). I've had people say to me that they want me to show things on apple body types. Since this is a personal style in terms of body type. Here are some below:
    • Apple - I'm Fashionable Late
    • Hourglass - Essie Golden
    • Rectangle - From the Rez to the City
    • Strawberry or Inverted Triangle - Nicolette Mason
    • Petite - Petite Plus Meow
    • Tall - Manfattan
    • In-Betweener - CurvyGirlChic
  • Just don't look - I haven't looked at a model since 1967. HA! Just kidding, but when I'm shopping online, I'm looking at the clothes.  I'm not comparing my body type to hers...I'm just thinking about how the item will look on me.

I wish hippie style would be fashionable every year. That what is appearing in the shops is just awesome... fringes, lace, boho prints. I hope they won't forget the plus size section. Sometimes I think almost every plus size shop/section do the same things, like they would steal from each other the ideas for the same boring cuts and prints. I hope this will change soon!

I discovered the combination of burgundy and orange this spring. I love it so much and regret I didn't get this idea earlier. By the fashion magazines with blue jeans elements it is the perfect combination for this summer. The three colors remind me the lazy summer days a littl e bit. B ecause the weather doesn't pamper I had to "use" this colors in a warmer outfit. I hope I can soon wear this shirt with jeans shorts (still need to find a pair!) and put this warm cardigan to the closet for a few months. The moccasins will stay, because thanks their soft leather they always has been perfect for the summer.

I promised you to show my watch with another wristband. I think the brown one looks perfekt with the outfit. You still can save 15% buying a watch on www.danielwellington.com by taping the code "tps-blog".
