You Snooze You Lose

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)

Happy Monday all!

When I first laid eyes on this Jibri skirt, I gasped at how it was the perfect embodiment of my love of vivid colors and bold print.  I quickly snatched it up because I knew it would go fast (it sold out in 24hrs).   It always bothers me when I see great PS clothing quickly selling out.  While on one had it’s great for the designer/retailer but on the other many PS women miss out. I’m a firm believer that all PS woman deserve access to awesome clothing that caters to our personal taste.  Although this annoys me, I completely acknowledge that the clothing options for PS women has grown by tremendously.  I believe eventually  there be so many great clothing options to choose from, we wont need to rush and buy an item.

Have a wonderful day!

Confessions of a Newly Realized Duff

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)

Hi. My name is Sarah. I’m 30-something years old… And I’m a DUFF.

Picture
Perhaps one of the most un-DUFFiest women in Hollywood these days wore this shirt about a month ago. And broke the internet. Not as much as her sister bootie did, but just enough for people to wonder, was Kylie Jenner trying to be a body positive advocate?

People are different.

Picture
In every circle of friends there should be differences—those differences make us irreplaceable. Where we go awry is when we brandish our differences like hands of poker. When one person holds up the distorted mirror in order to give themself a better shape.  When differences become the scapegoat that helps others to cope. Calling anyone a DUFF speaks more about the person flinging the term around than the potential DUFF in question.

Weighing all this, there is only one conclusion I can draw.  Call me a DUFF if you will. I can’t stop you. And, I assure you, it won’t stop me.  I know who I am. Who you are, and how you see me, has nothing to do with me… And everything to do with you.

Go For Brouge!

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)
Every Spring, it's a struggle to say farewell to our trusty black tights. However, one coping mechanism is to imagine all of the shoes we can wear sans tights and, with the influx of summer brogues, it's easy to find a pair that are guaranteed to put a spring in your step.
€75, Marks & Spencer
20% off THIS WEEKEND
Marks and Spencer have 20% off their footwear this weekend, so what better time to go brogue! This cute blue pair would be fab with ankle grazer trousers or jeans and also come in cream. Niiiice!
London Rebel @ Asos, €40.99
ASOS stock a brand called London Rebel, who are great for their killer kicks. These nude heels will see us through the Summer with tea dresses and jeans alike. I've just bought these, so will update on Facebook to let you know how they get on!
€42, Marks & Spencer
20% off THIS WEEKEND
These little white brogues are also too cute to leave behind, probably best to avoid jumping in puddles with these ones though, bet they're a divil to keep clean!
€225, Marks & Spencer
(Bit dear I reckon!)
If you are thinking to invest, these silver brogues from the "Best of British" collection in Marks are for you. Even with a 20% discount this weekend it's fairly steep, however some say a good pair of brogues will last a lifetime. I'm not convinced, but they do look cool if you've got the cash!
€22/24, Marks & Spencer
(Limited sizes left)
If the school shoe vibe doesn't do it for you, you can still daydream about flats with these lovely loafers in mirror shine silver!

So throw the black tights into the black hole of your wardrobe and embrace the new spring shoe, and go for brogue!

Casual Friday: Happy Valentine’s Day!

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)

TGIF all!

Since Valentine’s Day is all about love, I use the day to  acknowledge my family and friends whom I love dearly.   I didn’t always feel this way and used to spend the holiday being sad about my lack of a mate (back in college me & my gals would dress in black and eat A LOT of Ben & Jerry’s! LOL).  Over the years,  I’ve learned that just because I don’t have romantic love doesn’t mean I’m not loved.  The love of my family and friends  completes me and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So celebrate Valentine’s Day with your family and friends too! Love definitely makes the world go around!

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!!

Have a great weekend!

It's time to start thinking about shoes for spring, so I did a round up of some fun wide width shoe options for spring.  The links to each shoe is above.  I have to say that I'm stalking the ASOS site for newly added wide width shoes. They are on my stalker list. LOL.  Every shoe that I have purchased thus far has been amazing.  Hope you like and happy shopping!

Nautical Love

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)

My favorite color combinations for spring/summer is hands down the nautical combinations.  There is always a navy blue base, but you can add in green, red, white, and add gold accents. I like to call it yachting chic, even thought boats make me sea sick.  I was pumped to see these colors already on display at Nordstrom. These are pants are so comfortable and travel great, which is good because I hate ironing. The day of my trip, I slid into Nordstrom to see what I could see. LOL. I am so e xcited for spring, and the Encore section was filled with beautiful spring jackets, brightly printed dresses, and springy, lightweight fabrics.  Yep, it's spring.

I found these pieces just in time for my mini vacay to Santa Cruz.  I love trucking down there because it's close to me, but far away enough that it gives me a chance to get away.  When I on vacation it's important for me to look put together, but also comfortable. I wanted something that I could go to dinner in, look nice, but without a whole lot of thought (or ironing).  I wore this to Aquarius with the hubby, which was a restaurant at the Dream Inn, the hotel we stayed for the weekend.  (Shout out to the Dream Inn for letting Shug stay.  Apparently, they aren't a pet-friendly hotel, but Orbitz had them listed as such).  The food was good, but our room was even better.  We had a seasi de room, right off of the beach with a beautiful pool and view.  It felt so good to fall asleep to the ocean.  It made me a little homesick for Brunswick and the smell of salty air. Sigh.  I can’t wait until I can get there again.

Style Notes:  I adore spring coat.  This trench is no exception.  It's from the Sejour brand at Nordstrom but wasn't on the website.  It is a lightweight coat that is the perfect spring coat for those chilly nights. Shoes are from Nordstrom and bag is from Olivia + Zoe.  Note to my girls who are comfortable tucking in, this looks can easily be worn with the shirt tucked out.

Mixing Prints for Beginners

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)

Mixing Prints for beginners
Mixing prints can be intimidating, especially for style beginners. I wanted to break down mixing prints for the "beginner mixer" in hopes of helping you do a little mixing of your own.  Here are some tips for getting your mix on!
  • Each print has a common color - For easy mixing, choose prints that have a common color running through both prints.
  • Start out with two prints - It can get a little complicated with mor e than one.  Mix two, master that first and then experiment with three. I most often mix 2 prints and on occasion add in a third.
  • Mix prints with a similar saturation - By saturation, I mean intensity.  Mixing pastel prints compliment each other and mixing jewel tone (think jewel tones: Ruby Red, Sapphire Blue, etc) compliment each other.
  • Put a solid between the two prints - Think of your body as a sort of placement map.  Let's say your top is printed, your pants/skirt is solid, and your shoes or bag are printed.  It breaks up the pattern and is a super easy way to dabble in mixing.
  • Black & White prints mix easily - I've rarely seen two black and white prints that didn't look good together.  Black/White Polka Dots & black/white stripes are always a winning combination to me. < /li>
  • Treat Leopard as a Neutral Solid - In my head, leopard is a nude solid.  I've paired with polka dots, houndstooth, etc.  You'll be surprised how easily it mixes.
  • Trust your eye - I get a feeling from a lot of the looks that I wear.  I say to myself, "Yes! This is perfect." or "No, this isn't it." One thing that I told myself from the start of this blog and even before that.  If it's fabulous to me, then I'm wearing it!
  • Have fun! - Don't get so tied up in the rules that fashion is no longer fun.  As a person who has been getting dressed in front of you guys for 6 years, I make sure that when it doesn't feel like fun, I switch up my style.

Look Back At It

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)
When there are warm temperatures outside it's time to bring out the all white.  While, in Santa Cruz, hubby and I went over to a vegan spot nearby called the Saturn Cafe recommended to us by Nicolette Mason.  I love when I post pictures on Instagram while traveling and people give me advice on places to go.  I decided to wear this all white look. This fun top is from Charlotte Russe and the new plus size clothing that they are launching.  I know you may say I don't know if wearing all white and going to dinner should happen simultaneously. HA! I'm not the most careful eater, but when I am we aring so mething I love I take extra care not to mess myself up. It's a multitasking adventure during the entire meal time, but I like and challenge, and I succeeded in not spilling.

Charlotte Russe is launching a plus size, and I got the details and insight on the clothing.   Let's just give a cheer for more options. Whoop Whoop! Charlotte Russe will now be offering sizes 0 to 24 online and in select stores.  This fun little top is a part of the launch.  The line will be offering tops, bottoms, dresses, jumpsuits, and denim.  I had a chance to try a variety of items, and this line will be in junior plus sizes.  I would advise sizes up 1 to 2 sizes per garments.  All items I tried were in a 3X. This top is in a 3x as well. I i ncluded some of my favorite pictures of the line below.

Just A Little Stage Fright...

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)
I'm not a public speaker.  Honestly, I don't really like talking in groups of people that I don't know (to me that counts as public speaking LOL), so when I was asked to be the keynote at San Francisco State's Black Women's Appreciation Dinner that feeling of sheer terror was the first thing that I felt. As I have grown in blogging, the requests for public speaking have increased, and I'm quite ashamed to admit that I have dodged quite a few opportunities.  When I was asked to speak at this event by people I consider friends it makes it a lit tle hard er to say no. Then I thought to myself; this may be the perfect opportunity to prove to myself that I can do this and not suck.  So I took on the challenge of preparing for and composing a speech in a weekend.  Deep breaths.

The week flew by, and I was so busy I didn't really even have time to be nervous.  I just knew I had a job to do and a speech to get right.  The day comes, and I'm shooting video that morning for one thing, then going to straight to my friend's house (in San Francisco traffic, of course) to get dressed. Still no time to be nervous.  Finally, I'm walking behind the stage right before I give my speech. I have a long 15 minutes to wait before I'm up, and I literally start shaking.  Like really shaking. &nb sp;I too k that time to pray and do deep breathing, and it worked to slow my heart rate and not give me the shaky voice.  I got through it, and people said they liked my speech and felt inspired.  Thank God for not sucking and for not avoiding a challenge because it was going to make me uncomfortable.

In case you are interested in my speech, I'm pasting it below. I was hoping to have it on video, but these phones and battery power and storage space. Ugh!

"Good evening students, faculty, and alumni.  It is an honor to be chos en as yo ur speaker for this very illustrious event.  Today, we honor Black women, and since I am one, I want to take the time to speak to my sisters directly in regards to your future selves.  The selves that will wake up tomorrow and impact the world.

My favorite quote and the one I live my life by, comes from Alice from the story Alice in Wonderland, it reads, “Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as 6 impossible things before breakfast.”  The Garnerstyle journey has been a string of impossible ventures and accomplishments. The notion that a fat girl, a black fat girl, can be fashionable & stylish a decade ago was considered impossible.  Now add that girl being featured in Vogue Italia, Forbes, Time, and the New York Times and all for style.  That makes it an even more ridiculous not ion. Now add that she is a style ambassador for two major retailers. Well, I’m sure if I would have voiced this as a possibility six years ago someone might advise me to seek professional help, but after six years of this journey that is my reality.

Apart from the accolades that look great on paper, I’ve been a part of a small group of women to pioneer a massive movement of self-love, confidence, self-acceptance, and last, but not least, style at any size.  Apparently, it is considered revolutionary to like yourself, show up, and show out if you don’t look like the mainstream idea of beauty.  My mother-in-law called me recently to tell me how my blog has impacted her clients. She is a therapist for individuals suffering from depression, and she would show her bigger clients my blog.  One of her clien ts excla imed, I didn’t believe looking beautiful like that at my size was possible.  Instead of those clients spending all day in their pajamas, they have taken a small, but very important step to uplift their own image of themselves by simply taking that extra time to get dressed for the day. Knowing that I’ve helped at least one people to see their own inner beauty is what keeps me going on the days that even I want to quit.  10 years ago, such positive imagery of plus size people was rare and therefore being able to impact someone’s life on this level was unheard of.

I’m giving you a snippet into my journey because I want you to know that everything you want for yourself can be a reality with the following attributes: self-worth, determination, and the ability to dream.  Know that your self-wort h is of your own making. It’s not what the media would have you believe.  You are strong, intelligent, and beautiful.  If you haven’t already, make today the day you take control of your self-worth.  It will be your biggest ally in accomplishing your dreams and living a life that is fulfilled.   Determination is to help you push forward when all you are hearing are no’s and doors closing. I’ve heard so many no’s the first four years of my journey, and I took those no’s as a cue to work harder. Finally, never stop dreaming, even when your dreams seem impossible and unreachable.  For without your dreams, you cannot fulfill your purpose.

Today, as we are in support of each other in sisterhood, I can’t help but remind myself of one important factor not mentioned previously.  I would not be stand ing before you today without the help of a community…some people that I know and love and some that I may never have the privilege of meeting.  It’s so important that you support each other.  Recently, a friend, who I had probably not spoken to in a year, sent me flowers. She wanted to send flowers to 3 women that weren’t expecting anything, but to let them know that they inspired her.  What she didn’t know is what I was going through at that time.  As a blogger, my primary interactions are with the public while it’s an overwhelmingly positive interaction between myself and the community there are times when the opposite is true. As you all may know, people can sometimes be hateful and mean spirited. Seeing, hearing, and reading such things can eventually run an emotional toll. At that moment in time, the stress had added up so much that I started to question my own dreams and can I really accomplish them.  When she sent me those flowers, s he didnâ €™t know how much I needed that message that very day. She inspired me to refocus my efforts and to be even more supportive of the next woman. She helped me push past a dark cloud that had been over my head for weeks.  As you are focusing on your dreams, don’t forget to lift up the next woman.  None of us get to where we are entirely alone.  Remember that."

Finally as we end on the high note of infinite possibilities, I want to finish Alice’s quote because in my heart I know this what she would have said, “Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as 6 impossible things before breakfast and after breakfast I’m making those 6 impossible things reality.”

The culprits behind getting me to be the keynote: Desiree (Fancydime blogger & my new assistant) & Stephan (the event producer)
Dress: LightintheBox Shoes: Asos, Clutch: Kate Spade (similar), Lip: NYX Razzle, Bracelet:  Rocksbox

Style Notes:  I ordered the dress from Lightinthebox (link above) and had it altered to cocktail length and had the lining increased to accommodate my hip. The dress is in a size 20.  I have talked about this site before and just want to give some warnings.  Although, I think everything came out fine with the dress, it takes a long time to ship and I wouldn't count on being able to return it and get an actual refund.  The dress comes from overseas and although my dress came out nice, it doesn't mean yours will.  I feel like this is an order at your own risk situation.  I just wanted to keep it real with you guys, so that you understand that there is a risk.  I've seen a lot of articles written about these overseas online shops and I ordered this dress well over a year ago before all the information on these shops started coming out.  You may ask, "Why did you buy it?" Well I like to have a formal gown just in case and the price was inexpensive, so if it didn't work out I didn't lose a lot.

Celebrity Style Capture: Solange Knowles

Solange Knowles style, Plus Size Celebrity Style
I've been wanting to capture Solange's looks for over a year, but her style is so fashion forward it's really hard to dupe them with what is available in plus fashion now.  That's why I'm so excited that I got to collaborate with Demestiks New York on this look.  A lot of you know I've worn this designer's looks and he had some pieces that were similar to Solange's look.  Our visions complimented each other and came out with this look.  It's not an exact dupe, but has a very similar silhouette on the skirt and besides the print, th e tops a re almost identical.  In addition, that side thigh slit is something that I'm not comfortable with, so we went with a low middle slit.  This has a Beetlejuice feel, but in a fun way and I'm all the way here for it. This look will be available for a limited time by the designer.

Style Notes: This fabric has no give.  You'll want to follow the Demestiks New York size chart.

Pretty in Pink + Giveaway

HTML email (kfmyblog.blogspot.com)
plus size button up blouse
I just want to say sorry to my people that are still in terribly cold temperatures.  We had a really mild winter and spring has come early in the Bay.  We've been enjoying 70 degree days. I'm not sure what this means for the summer, but as of now I am extremely happy.  I'm taking full advantage of an early spring to usher in the pink color trend for this year with a Foxcroft button up blouse.  Wearing the color instantly brightens up your mood, your day, and I promise people will give you compliments all day.  It's just such an attracting color.  N ow to the fun part, Foxcroft will be giving away 3 of their fabulous blouses to one single winner.  Enter at the Rafflecopter widget at the bottom of the post.  Good Luck!

Style Notes:  I've been wearing Foxcroft blouses for over a year now (see post here) and I love them. When it comes to getting a great fit out of a button up blouse, they are it.  Both the arms and bust areas are roomy. This blouse doesn't have stretch and that speaks to the amazing fit.  I got this blouse is a size 22. I probably could have sized down one. The tops run true to size.  Shirts are crisp and the collars are stiff, which is a requirement for me to buy this type of shirt. Collars are so important in the look of the overall shirt.  Lazy collars can make the shirt look sloppy, so I like that these are extremely stiff. You can flip up or wear down.
